Secure Browsers - FAQ & Tips

Question 1: I can’t change the keyboard language while in the secure browser mode? Is that an issue with the browser?

No it isn’t an issue. Respondus works at the operating system level by blocking most common shortcuts used, which includes Ctrl & Alt combinations. Kindly find the following link http://support.respondus.com/kbimages/support/using-multiple-language-keyboards-with-lockdown-browser.pdf which describes that in case of running assessments that will require changing keyboard language during the session, the lab computers should be already configured to allow that through “Alternative” shortcuts instead of “alt+shift”, as the “Alt” shortcut combination is blocked by the browser for security purposes.

Question 2: Every time the browser launches, it prompts me for an Admin permission or Admin credential to proceed. Why is that happening?

There are 2 different Editions for this browser:

Edition #1: This is called “Student Edition” which is the browser you saw today in the lab. This instance will prompt the user for an elevated administration permission every time its launched in a “none-admin” windows/mac user. However, the added value here is that it takes away the effort required by the Administrator to configure the PC/Mac to “disable fast user switching” or “disable task manager”, etc...

Edition #2: This is called “Lab Edition” where the student is never prompted with the Admin password dialog. However, the catch here is that the PCs/Macs in the Lab should be Administered previously to disable the above “Extra” OS level permissions.

From a logistical standpoint, we should decide when rolling out on the best blueprint that suits all labs/administrators.
